Why Vaccinating Your Pet Is Important

Vaccinations are one of the most effective ways to prevent serious illnesses in pets. Vaccines build immunity against harmful diseases and reduce the risk of spreading infections within the community. During your companion’s wellness visit, Dr. Walia will discuss which vaccines your pet may need based on their previous history and lifestyle.

Some of the most common questions we hear include: Are vaccines safe? How often are they needed? Please know that we only recommend vaccines that are truly necessary for your pet, and we make sure they’re given safely and at the right time. Puppies and kittens typically start vaccines around 6–8 weeks of age, with boosters spaced out over several months. Adult pets will need periodic boosters to maintain protection. After the initial series, most vaccinations only need to be given once per year and, in a few cases, every three years.

Dog Vaccines

Affordable Animal Hospital offers both core and non-core vaccines for dogs, depending on their health and lifestyle needs. Core vaccines include Rabies, DHLPPCV (Distemper, Adenovirus, Parvovirus, Leptospirosis, and Canine Coronavirus), and Bordetella (Kennel Cough). These vaccines protect against potentially life-threatening diseases.

Non-core vaccines include Lyme disease and Canine Influenza. These may be recommended if your dog goes to parks, boarding facilities, or areas with ticks. Dr. Walia will choose what’s best for your pet without recommending anything unnecessary. If you have any questions about which vaccinations are being recommended and why, please ask. We want pet parents to feel informed in their pet’s care.

Cat Vaccines

For cats, we offer core vaccines like Rabies, FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia), and FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis). The FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus) vaccine is also considered core for most kittens as well as outdoor cats to keep them protected. Our team will walk you through what your feline really needs and why these vaccinations are considered essential for cats.
