Puppy and Kitten Care

Puppies and kittens require a lot of extra care.

First-Year Veterinary Care for Young Pets
The first year of your pet’s life is full of important milestones. Regular exams with Dr. Walia track your pet’s growth and catch any early health concerns. These visits also include essential vaccinations to protect against diseases like parvovirus, feline leukemia, rabies, and more. Our team can microchip them during the same visits for a lifelong ID. We will also talk about when to spay or neuter your young pet.
Need help with choosing the right food for your puppy or kitten? Dr. Walia can recommend affordable nutrition options based on your pet’s breed, age, and activity level. We carry maintenance diets right here in our veterinary clinic and can special order if needed.
Vaccine Schedules for Kittens and Puppies
Young pets need a series of vaccines spaced out over the first few months of life. Puppies and kittens usually start their vaccine schedule at 6–8 weeks of age and continue with boosters until around 16–18 weeks.
Dr. Walia will create a custom plan for your pet and explain what’s needed and when. Staying on schedule is key to making sure your new companion is protected as they grow. If you ever need to reschedule your fur baby’s booster appointments, please give us a call as soon as possible. Waiting too long between vaccine boosters will mean needing to restart the vaccine series, and extra vaccines are an extra cost that you want to avoid. Make sure to stay on track!
Why Do Puppies and Kittens Need Deworming?
Many puppies and kittens are born with or pick up intestinal worms early in life. That’s why deworming is a routine part of early care. Dr. Walia will recommend a deworming plan based on your pet’s age and health. If you picked up your young pet from a breeder or shelter, they may have even started the rounds of deworming treatments your puppy or kitten will need.
When your pet is old enough, our staff will also discuss getting them started on monthly flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives to keep them protected all year long. We carry parasite prevention options right in our clinic. No need to pay for shipping! Plus, our helpful team can help you choose what option is best for your pet.
